The three modalities describe how signs approach change and action. Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) are initiators — they start things and lead the charge. Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) are sustainers — they maintain, build, and persist. Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) are adapters — they're flexible, changeable, and go with the flow. Each season of the year begins with a Cardinal sign, is sustained by a Fixed sign, and transitions through a Mutable sign.
