What Is Decan in Astrology?
Also known as: Decanate
Quick Definition
Each zodiac sign is divided into three 10-degree sections, adding nuance based on when within the sign you were born.
Decan: In-Depth Explanation
Each 30-degree zodiac sign is divided into three decans of 10 degrees each. The first decan (0-9°) is the purest expression of the sign. The second decan (10-19°) is influenced by the next sign of the same element. The third decan (20-29°) is influenced by the remaining sign of the same element. For example, Leo's three decans are influenced by the Sun (pure Leo), Jupiter (Leo-Sagittarius blend), and Mars (Leo-Aries blend). Decans explain why not all people of the same sign are alike.
