What Is Retrograde in Astrology?

Also known as: Rx, Apparent Retrograde Motion

Quick Definition

When a planet appears to move backward in the sky from Earth's perspective, often associated with delays and review.

Retrograde: In-Depth Explanation

Retrograde motion is an optical illusion caused by the relative speeds and orbits of Earth and other planets. When a planet is retrograde, astrologers believe its energy turns inward, causing disruptions or delays in the areas that planet governs. Mercury retrograde (affecting communication and technology) is the most famous, but all planets go retrograde. Rather than fearing retrogrades, they're best used as periods for review, reflection, and revisiting unfinished business.
